What Is Agro-Industry?
The agro-industrial complex unites all sectors of the economy that are directly involved in the production of agricultural products or involved in bringing them to the ultimate consumer. In general, the agro-industrial complex has three stages of production.
The first stage is the manufacturing of means of production both for the agricultural sector and for the industries engaged in the processing. The term “means of production” includes various machinery and equipment, fertilizers, feeds, pesticides and so on. The second stage includes agriculture. The third stage is the procurement, storage, processing, transportation and sale of agricultural products, including catering operations and trade.
Today the first stage defines the development of the whole agro-industrial complex of Nigeria. After all, the level of agricultural mechanization enhances the effectiveness of all agricultural work. The second by importance is the third stage. Its successful work provides better preservation of agricultural products.
What to do with produced products?
Big companies sell produced agricultural products for other big companies or abroad. But many Nigerian farmers face the prodlem of production distribution. What options for the sale do farmers have exept for dealing with the resellers? The local shops, weekend fairs, natural markets, small cafes and catering companies. In addition, the opportunity to participate in government and commercial tenders and professional exhibitions.
In turn, agro-industry is subdivided into sectors such as agriculture (grain production, feed production, the production of industrial crops, horticulture, vegetable growing etc.), livestock (cattle, poultry, farming, beekeeping) and fish farming.
The absence of wholesale buyers, purchasing fresh farm products is a big problem of small agricultural enterprises. The task of wholesale buyers is the formation of the orders to the manufacturer, the organization of delivery of the farm products on a common base, and then to retail sites.
