Elevator Crash: Dr Vwaere, Victim of Gross Negligence, Death Avoidable – NMA
The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has described the death of Dr Diaso Vwaere as a victim of gross negligence, insisting that the story surrounding her death was avoidable and no doubt left a very sour taste in the mouth.
NMA said it has keenly followed the issues surrounding Vwaere’s death from injuries sustained from the crash of the elevator in the House Officers’ quarters of General Hospital Odan.
The umbrella body of doctors in the country said it reached the conclusion after reviewing all the facts, adding that it was clear that Dr. Vwaere was a victim of gross negligence in maintenance of the elevator.
This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by Dr. Uche Ojinmah, the NMA’s President.
“NMA hereby calls on the Lagos State Government to quickly initiate measures to assuage the pains and loss being felt by the family of Dr. Vwaere. The Government should also provide psychological support for the family and all the doctors residing and working in the General Hospital, Odan.
“The Government should also initiate inspection of all public elevators in Lagos State and commence routine maintenance.
While sending out the organization’s heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased colleague, NMA asked God to console the entire family and grant her soul peaceful repose,” part of the statement read.
The NMA also condoled with the family of the deceased and prayed God to console the entire family and grant her soul peaceful repose.
However, NMA called on the Lagos Government to carry out a thorough investigation and impose sanctions as appropriate.
NMA insisted that justice must be seen to be done and that it would resist any attempt to subvert or mitigate justice.
While calling on the state government to quickly initiate measures to assuage the pain and loss being felt by the family of the deceased, it requested the government to initiate inspection of all public elevators in the state and commence routine maintenance.
Meanwhile, the association commended the efforts of its members in Lagos State in ensuring justice for the departed colleague.
