Gbenga Adeyinka 1st is popularly known as the Comedian Of The Federal Republic. Helen Event Blog recently had an interview on his role as an outstanding compare at weddings as he always makes it a memorable event for the new weds and the challenges attached to the job.
Enjoy!
Helen: HOW DID YOU BECOME A WEDDING MC?
Gbenga Adeyinka: While on campus, i did a couple of Mc jobs. When
i graduated people who knew me back then will always call me to Mc at their
weddings. I was able to cut my teeth and understand the element of weddings. What
to say, what not to say and how a wedding should run, that really helped me a lot.
Helen: WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU CONSIDER BEFORE YOU TAKE UP A WEDDING JOB AS A COMPERE?
Gbenga Adeyinka: I talk to the couple, i have a meeting with
them to find out the kind of people they are. There are some weddings i don’t
usually want to take if i see that it might have an itch in terms of breaking
up later. I can say that i’m one of the few Mc’s that have done weddings that
have not broken up.
Helen: WHAT KIND OF WEDDING JOB WILL YOU NOT TAKE?
Gbenga Adeyinka: I won’t do a wedding my spirit does not agree with.
Helen: WHAT IS YOUR CLIENTEL LIKE?
Gbenga Adeyinka: The good thing about me is that i’m very
versatile. As i work for the well to do, i also work for the aspiring. You
don’t have to be Abacha’s son or Obasanjo’s son for me to do your wedding.
Helen: ARE YOU EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED TO WEDDINGS?
Gbenga Adeyinka: I’m very emotionally attached to weddings. Most
times, i say that a lot of couple cheat me because they know i will always give
them a discount. Nowadays, i don’t discuss with them, i allow my managers do
the discussions because no matter what, i’ll always want to make the couple
happy on that day. So i take a lot of things into consideration.
Helen: HAVE YOU EVER BEEN EMBARRASSED AT A WEDDING?
Gbenga Adeyinka: Yes. It was one wedding i did when i just started. I
spoke to the father of the bride, we agreed to see on the day of the wedding. When
i got to the reception, i realized that the band had not yet arrived so i
decided to call the man who paid me. I kept calling but he wasn’t picking so he
called back and said ‘what’s wrong with you? we are in church’ so i said sorry
sir the band is not here. He said ‘band? Are you not suppose to bring the band?’
i said no Sir, you paid me for Mc. he said ‘hey! Don’t let me get there and there
will be no band there oo!’ so to save the day, i called a DJ to come and play
music. After the event, he asked me to come and collect my balance on Monday. So i went and said Sir i’m here to collect my balance he said’ for what? You were sweating
then you said u’ll bring music, you brought one DJ to come and start playing
music’ so i said i’m the Mc of the event he said ‘no i paid everything. Ok. if
you are Mc what will you talk with if you don’t bring music? Anyway, at the end
of the day, his daughter walked in thanking me and i was paid eventually. Since
then, i have a form that people fill specifying what services i’m to render.
Helen: HOW MANY WEDDINGS HAVE YOU COMPERED IN THE LAST ONE YEAR?
Gbenga Adeyinka: I do weddings almost every weekend of the
year. Then i do Thursdays sometimes Tuesdays as well. I should have done over
200 weddings.
Helen: WHAT ASPECT OF A WEDDING THRILLS YOU THE MOST?
Gbenga Adeyinka: When i harass the husband to kiss his wife
without stopping until i say so. i also like the throwing of the bouquets.
Helen: WHAT ASPECT ANNOYS YOU THE MOST?
Gbenga Adeyinka: When there are so many people telling you
what to do. I don’t like it when they have engagement, introduction, church
wedding and reception on the same day. It gets everyone tired so no matter what
you do you can’t know them. For me it’s not fun because i have to enjoy the
wedding to do a good job.
Helen: WHAT IS THE CLASSIEST WEDDING YOU HAVE EVER ANCHORED?
Gbenga Adeyinka: I’ve done quite a lot of classy weddings.
I’ve done a wedding on a ship, i’ve done a wedding for someone in Ghana in a Theater
Art Gallery. It was really nice because we were right in the middle and
everyone watched us from the top.
Helen: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST MC JOB LIKE?
Gbenga Adeyinka: It was back in the days. It was a
job, at that time, i didnt know i could be paid for it.
Helen: WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT 5years?
Gbenga Adeyinka: I’ll have my own Event centre where people
can come and have their own weddings. I hope to have a T.V Station where we can
showcase these weddings and do more for younger Mc’s so they can be as good as
the great ones. They need to be taught appropriateness because it’s not everything
that must be said at different events.
Helen: Thanks for your time.
Gbenga Adeyinka: It’s a pleasure
