Ini Edo, Annie Idibia, Lami Phillips Others Walk Against Rape

Actresses Annie Idibia, Ini Edo and Kehinde Bankole as well as singer Lami Phillips, Emmanuel Ikubese (Mr. Nigeria) joined others to participate in the 5th edition of the Walk against Rape, WAR, in Lagos on Tuesday, March 10. The walk kicked off from the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Ground GRA, Ikeja to Alausa Secretariat. Designed to give a voice to sexually abused persons – especially women and children, the Walk against Rape initiative is also committed totally to eradicating the scourge of rape in Nigeria where the number of cases is reportedly on an alarming rise.

Ini Edo said, “Domestic violence and rape occur in so many homes in Africa. Women are meant to be protected by men and not abused by them. Let’s work together on this and send Rapist to the zoo where they belong”?

Aside the celebrities that attended the walk, several Women Organizations, Non-Government Organizations, Representatives from different Local Governments in Lagos State, Media Practitioners, TV / Radio Presenters, Students Delegates, secondary school students, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arms of various Corporate Bodies also came out to lend their voice and support the cause

According to the National Coordinator, Esther Ijewere- Kalejaiye, “Our aim is to help in encouraging victims to speak out and reduce the stigmatization attached to the victims of sexual abuse and Rape as well as use “Walk Against Rape” as a platform to inform the society about the soaring scourge of sexual abuse especially as it relates to young girls and women in general.

This year we made an appeal to the State Government for the creation of more Help Centre’s across the state, preferably in all Local Government Area in a letter that was read openly at the Deputy Governor’s office where the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Mrs. Ogunmola omobolanle received us.
