Princess Charlotte’s Christening Cake: A Tier From The Duke & Duchess Wedding Cake Made In 2011 Will Be Served To Guests

Princess Charlotte’s christening cake is a tier from the confection produced for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding in 2011.

Traditionally, the top tier of a wedding cake is saved with the intention of re-icing it and serving it to guests at the christening of the couple’s first child.

Subsequent children are usually provided with separate cakes made specifically for the occasion.

Guests at Princess Charlotte’s christening will instead be presented with more wedding cake, which will be served during the tea at Sandringham hosted by the Queen.

One of the eight tiers from the cake was also served at Prince George’s christening in October 2013.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding cake was designed by Fiona Cairns and was made from 17 individual fruit cakes.

The cake was decorated with cream and white icing using the Joseph Lambeth technique, a particularly intricate method of piping, plus 900 individually iced flowers and 17 different types of iced leaves.

A garland design around the middle of the cake matched the architectural garlands decorated around the top of the Picture Gallery in Buckingham Palace, the room in which the cake was displayed during the wedding.
