Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State has warned that commercial banks operating in the state would be destroyed if they keep turning back depositors of the old N500 and N1,000 notes.

Ganduje made the threat on Friday as he inspected palliatives being distributed to the citizens to cushion the effects of the hardship caused by the cashless policy.

President Muhammadu Buhari, had, in his nationwide broadcast on Thursday ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN to keep both the old and new N200 notes in circulation to cushion the hardship being felt as a result of the cashless policy.

Buhari said the old N500 and N1000 notes are no longer legal tenders and should be withdrawn from circulation.

However, Governor Ganduje is one of the All Progressives Congress, APC governors who publicly kicked against Buhari’s directives and even accused the president of trying to truncate a democratic process.

“Any bank that refuses to accept old five hundred and one thousand Naira notes will be destroyed. We will not tolerate such disobedience from any financial institution operating within our jurisdiction,” the Governor said on Friday.
